SILVIO CAIOZZI


Biography

Director and producer of film and television, Silvio Caiozzi was born in Santiago de Chile on July 3, 1944. He graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications at Columbia College in Chicago in 1967.

In his position as film director, he has created a prolific amount of work, receiving innumerable national and international awards, such as the prize for the Best Director in the Festival Class A of International Cinema of Montreal in the year 2000 for his film “Coronación” ("Coronation"). Throughout his career he has become one of the most awarded directors of Latin America.

He has also participated as a jury member in relevant film festivals around the world and has held important trade union positions in Chile as president of the Association of Film Producers (APCT) on several occasions. Since 2014 he holds the position of Vice President of the National Union of Artists (UNA), institution that covers most of the institutions representative of the different artistic manifestations of the country.

At the beginning of his career, Caiozzi developed innumerable works as director of photography for outstanding Chilean filmmakers of the time, among them Helvio Soto, Aldo France and Raul Ruiz.

"Julio Begins in July" (1979) is the first film directed entirely by him. With it, he obtained great public and critical success as well as awards, being chosen by popular vote as “Best Chilean Film of the 20th Century".

Caiozzi produced and directed “La Luna en el Espejo” ("The Moon in the Mirror" 1990); the first Chilean film chosen and awarded in Official Competition in a Class A Festival (Venice). Caiozzi developed the script for this film together with the world-famous writer José Donoso. Later the director made the movies ”Coronación” ("Coronation") and "Cachimba", both based on literary works of the same author.

In 1979 he created the company Andrea Films S.A., with which he produced hundreds of commercials receiving a significant number of national and international awards. Highlighted among them the "Golden Lion" at the XXXIII International Advertising Film Festival of Cannes 1986, for the spot "Indian Firestone".

As a TV producer, he made in 1996 the successful program "And ... If it were true", based on paranormal phenomena. This program received the First Prize of Latin American Television at the International Film Festival of Cartagena (Colombia) in 1997. He also produced and directed in 2010 the 12 chapter documentary series “Descorchando Chile” ("Cheers from Chile"), a program aimed at highlighting the beauty of the country and its wines.

On August 1, 2006, the Association of Journalists of Spectacles of Chile (APES) awarded him the prize "Transcendental Contribution to the Universal Spectacle".

On October 31, 2007, the Chamber of Representatives of Chile, during the 19th International Film Festival of Viña del Mar, awarded Caiozzi with the "Recognition of the Creation and Development of the National Cinematographic Industry".

In 2004, Silvio Caiozzi became the first national filmmaker to be incorporated into the Chilean Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2013, the director rescues and relocates in the extreme southern part of the country, centennial and abandoned palafittes as the set for his new film “…Y de Pronto el Amanecer” ("... And Suddenly the Dawn”).

On September 4th, 2017, Caiozzi received the Best Film Award for his film “…Y de Pronto el Amanecer” at the World Film Festival of Montreal. This movie became the second chilean film winning a category “A” Festival.
