FERNANDO IS BACK (1998)

Synopsis

The documentary narrates the process through which two medical examiners, in charge of the Bureau of Identification of the Legal Medical Institute in Santiago, determine the identity of remains that are presumed to be from detained-disappeared prisoners during Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship (1973-1990).

The doctors show the technic used for the identification of a recently solved case: The remains of a man found with many others at Patio 29 of the Cementerio General de Santiago (Santiago Cemetery) in 1991. These remains belong to Fernando Olivares Mori, a 27-year-old Chilean who was a Government employee at CELADE -an organism of the United Nations- and disappeared on October 5th, 1973. After four years of working with the remains, the doctors conclusively establish the identity of Fernando and, after showing the remains to his widow, they officially inform the cause of death.

The documentary is able to show through the images the impact the return of Fernando has in his family: his son, his brothers, and his mother. Their testimony will explain to what extent human pain has no political leanings.
